Genesis 24:63

August 15 Morning
Isaac went out to meditate in the field in the evening.

His use of his time was very admirable. If we who spend so many hours in social networking, watching TV, and other useless pastimes, could learn wisdom, we would find deeper friendships and more introspection in meditation than in the vain stuff which we spend so much time on now. We would all know more, live nearer to God, and grow greater in grace, if we spent more time being alone with Him. Meditation chews the cud and extracts the real nourishment from the mental food gathered elsewhere. When Jesus is the theme, meditation is sweet indeed. Isaac found Rebecca while engaged in private musings. Many others have found their best beloved while worshipping.

His chosen place to meditate was very admirable. In a field we have a study of truths in nature for our deep thought. From the redwoods to the flowering weed, from the soaring eagle down to the chirping grasshopper, from the blue expanse of heaven to a drop of dew, all things are full of teaching. When the eye is divinely opened, that teaching flashes upon the mind far more vividly than from written books. Our little rooms are not as healthy, as suggestive, as agreeable, or as inspiring as fields and mountains. Let us count nothing common or unclean, but feel that all created things point to their Maker, and a field can be as holy as a cathedral.

His timing and exercise was very admirable. The time of sunset as it draws a veil over the day, encourages the quieting of the soul when earthly cares can yield place to the joys of communion with God. The glory of the setting sun excites our wonder, and the solemnity of approaching night awakens our awe. If the business of the day will permit it, it would be well, to spare an hour to go for a walk in the woods in the evening, but if not, the Lord is in the town too, and will meet with you in your car or on a crowded street. Let your heart go forth to meet Him.
